"Hey, B! Uh....Are you excited about Black Panther because he's a black super hero?"
Hells to the yes I am. I'm not excited JUST BECAUSE he's a black super hero. I'm a well-marketed nerd who could go into detail about Black Panther/Wakanda/Vibranium and the Marvel Universe, however, I can already feel your eyes glazing over. I am definitely also excited that he's a black superhero.
I'm excited about representation and what that does for people.
Do you not understand WHY Wonder Woman was such a big deal?
Do you not understand why Black Panther is already being touted as one? I mean, outside of the magic Black Twitter is going to make of it? (Reference: Essence )
Okay. Well, if you plan on trying to work with, lead, understand or sell to women and minorities, there is still a ton for you to learn about why these films are important.
Sidenote: The "Leaders" in companies that will pay 6 figures for an inspirational speaker, but, will whine about having to deal inclusiveness and minority representation are the entire reason why inclusiveness and representation are so important. Inspiration requires variety, otherwise, you only inspire only a portion of your people.
Superman is the American idol that all other heroes are molded after. A visual representation of our ideals and the perfection we strive to be. If you are white and male, that's great. Even if you are just male, cool, sweet, that's not going anywhere. But, culture, gender, and race are interwoven into our social fabric and identity.
We've utilized heroic tales to inspire our societies throughout all of history. Heroic stories calm fears, give hope and lift spirits while fostering values and important connections with others. Historically, they build the archetypes we paint for what's "good" and "evil". Super Heroes set the standard for the kinds of qualities we need to succeed in life and be admired by society. This is reflected in those we call our heroes now on small and large scales. For those Heroic traits of strength, perseverance, humility, and kindness, to truly inspire more of the population, we have to represent more the population.
Representation, someone that shares your identity also being presented as a hero does wonders. We need more of it.
