Hey guys-Brandon here, or as some people seem comfortable enough to call me "a reasonable black guy"(the implied insult seems to escape them, but for the sake of moving forward I let it slide).
With racial tensions on the rise; for good reason, I figured i'd touch base on the main-push back fueling the opposition to the riots against police brutality.
Ad hominem tu quoque= Answering criticism with criticism to avoid addressing the problem at hand, or, "You do it too, so there!"
- Just because you can find an instance where a black cop has murdered a white citizen, it doesn't justify the murder of an unarmed black man
- Just because you can find injustices to other races, it doesn't justify society tolerating the ignored rights of black citizens
- Just because you've experienced racism from a black person, it doesn't justify being racist towards black people
ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE TERRIBLE. No one is arguing against that.
"But why aren't there riots in our cases?"
There should be. Injustice is injustice. However, that's a distraction from the point. Black people aren't asking to excuse criminals, or the violation of others rights. We are asking our government to start holding up to the rights that most of us feel are ignored.
There are riots because we are tired of pushing twice as hard to get half of the results. There are riots because we are tired of the murder of our friends, our children, and our fathers being excused and swept under the rug. There are riots because we don't like having to raise our children to be afraid and fearful of law enforcement. There are riots because with the growth of technology and connection, everyone realizes that this isn't just their area, their job, their neighbors, their police force that's the problem. There are riots because it's an increasingly disturbing trend that black people have lived with, and is a gross disrespect of what we stand for as humans and Americans.
We want solidarity. I fight just as hard against the discrimination you are ranting about, don't let the ignorance of race bating divide us. Instead of trying to find reasons to justify yet another murder of a citizen by a police offer, stand with us.
